Blog Title

I decided on this title because I came across a wonderful anthology of Isaiah Berlin's essays titled "A Proper Study of Mankind." It was in the home of a wealthy, well-educated lawyer who is married to an Englishman. (The number of people with extensive selections of great literature and philosophy can't be large in Dhaka) She allowed us to raid her huge library, and I grabbed a number of interesting books. This one has been particularly enjoyable. My knowledge of Berlin had been limited to "Two Concepts of Library" and "The Fox and the Hedgehog," plus a bit from the extremely interesting Isaiah Berlin Centennial Conference held at Harvard in the fall (Alan Ryan, Amartya Sen, Martha Nussbaum, Janós Kis, Bernard Yack, and many others spoke). But this collection has made me very, very interested in Berlin's other work. I'm sure that I'll have more to say on it in the future.
